USA TODAY August 28, 1990, Tuesday, FINAL EDITION Radio stations pull the plug on Sinead David Landis The Star-Spangled Banner isn't on Sinead O'Connor's playlist, so several radio stations have kicked the Irish singer off theirs. O'Connor's refusal to allow the national anthem before a Friday concert prompted WHTZ in New York, WMJQ in Buffalo and WDHA in Morristown, N.J., to ban her records. Also, New York state Sen. Nicholas Spano called for a boycott of O'Connor concerts and two radio stations organized giveaways of American flags at her shows. ''I don't like the idea of a foreigner telling us we can't sing The Star- Spangled Banner whenever we want,'' says disc jockey John DeBella of Philadelphia's WMMR, who bought 5,000 flags to give away at O'Connor's show Monday night. WMJQ will give away flags at O'Connor's Darien, N.Y., show Thursday. Monday, O'Connor repeated that she meant no snub to the USA, but didn't want any anthems played at her concerts ''because they have nothing to do with music in general.'' She added an anthem of her choosing to Monday's show, Bob Marley's defiant Get Up Stand Up.
