Q Online Shane to sue Sinead O'Connor for 'defamation' Feb 14 2000 Former Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan intends to sue Sinead O'Connor for 'defamation of character' following her comments to Q magazine about why she reported the singer to the police for possessing heroin. The snarl-toothed singer is furious that Sinead shopped him to the police and denied her claims that she was acting 'to save his life'. "I can get her on three counts for defamation of character," said MacGowan. "One, she said I was an addict; two, that I was skint; and three, that I was incapable of functioning at any level. That's just rubbish, so I'm suing her. I don't care about the money, I just want to clear my name." MacGowan said that an argument developed after he teased O'Connor when she arrived in his flat last November (1999) dressed as a priest. "She stormed around my flat dressed like that, I thought she was going to a fancy dress party of something. I fell out with the Catholic Church years ago. She told me she was my priest and I had to obey her because I was a Catholic. I told her I didn't want any priest in my house, just to wind her up. And she left in a rage." MacGowan also said that O'Connor was a hypocrite because she smoked dope - and had bought some from a friend of his the day before she reported him to the police. For her part, O'Connor admitted that she smoked marijuana but said that "dope isn't something that kills people". O'Connor also denied that they had argued about the priesthood on that fateful November evening. "There was no argument about me being a priest, or him having a priest in the house," said O'Connor. "At one point I did mention his faith in the Holy Spirit, I used that to appeal to him. I know he's very hurt by what I did, and I respect his right to be angry. But I have a right to be angry at Shane for trying to kill himself."
